sea creatures

I am somewhat of a classic science fiction lover. For pleasure reading, I like being transported to impossibly faraway places, where the writer suggests I believe the existence of creatures that I know in my heart don’t exist. In allowing myself this indulgence I get a glimpse into the mindset and hopes of this age. I also like the adventure that takes me where I will never go.

Aliens both evil and benevolent punctuate most science fiction these days. In the Si-Fi context, an alien is an intelligent being from another planet. (Humans would be aliens when we land on Mars someday) Science fiction aliens come in a variety of shapes and sizes. Some look like us while others are so totally different we find them impossible or revolting. I am often amazed at how alien many deep-sea creatures are.

Pilgrims and Foreigners

Peter wrote to people (1 Peter 1:1) he called “aliens” (pilgrims and foreigners in some translations). But the idea is clear in all the translations, our true home is not this world. We are created for more than this temporary time.

Peter was writing about people who have put their faith and trust in Jesus Christ. If you fit that description, you really don’t fit in this world. This world’s thinking and aims are often at odds with the teachings of Jesus Christ. The “me first” attitude and “self-esteeming” philosophy, for instance, aren’t Biblical. The Bible teaches that what is valuable in this world is cheap construction material in heaven. We are aliens!
