Resurrection
I can remember while growing up Easter was always a big
Sunday for us. We have pictures of my brother and sisters and I dressed in
white shirts, squinting into the sun while we were recorded for posterity. We
always colored eggs and shared a more extravagant Sunday dinner than normal. I
know we went to church but the services really don't stand out in my mind.
Had you asked me
back then what Easter was all about, and I am not sure I would have known. Did
you?
Easter or
Resurrection Sunday is upon us again. Its celebration date changes every year
based on a calculation of time after certain moon phases. But what Easter is about is much more important than when
it is.
John records
(John 20) that he and Peter stumbled breathlessly into an empty tomb where the
body of Jesus was supposed to be. At the time neither of them had a real grasp
of what had happened. Jesus had risen from the dead and all of history was
going to revolve around that truth.
Paul wrote in 1
Cor. 15 that if the Resurrection is not true, our faith is worthless. When you
go to services this week and remember the death and resurrection of Christ,
don't forget that your very eternal life depends on its truth. If Jesus is not risen, you are dead in your
sins (1 Cor. 15:17).
But, HE IS RISEN INDEED!
