Campaign Promises

For good or bad the US is already heading into the long season of campaigning for the 2012 presidential election. One of the things that will happen with great intensity over the next 18 months is the making of campaign promises. Campaign promises as a whole have become kind of a joke in politics because so few are fulfilled as stated. It is likely some election winners simply make promises with good intentions that cannot be fulfilled. Other promises are probably made with the knowledge that they will never be followed through on. For some reason the average American voter has a short memory when it comes to making a candidate pay for not following through on what they promised to do.

Looked at from a certain perspective, Jesus was on a campaign for 3 1/2 years. He gathered His followers around Him, talked of a coming kingdom and a very big change in society itself. The message was revolutionary and very much bucking the system. Included in those promises was the prophecy that He would be crucified and raised from the dead. For most people listening, that promise probably sounded like a lot of the political promises. It is safe to say that few if any really believed that part of the Lord’s message.

Of course there is one glaring difference between the promises and prophecies of the Lord Jesus and that of the modern day politician… EVERYTHING Jesus promised and prophesied came true! He did rise from the dead! He did spend time with His disciples after the resurrection. As many as 500 people saw Him at one time. His promised resurrection has unlimited power to touch your life and mine and change even society at the base level.

Paul wrote, “For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures. (1 Cor. 15: 3-4 NIV)
He is Risen – He is Risen, indeed!
